development plans proceed at Squamish Adventure Centre parking lot

District of Squamish have recently approved two leases that will effectively remove the majority of the parking capacity at the Squamish Adventure Centre overflow parking lot. This lot is frequently used by local and visiting climbers for car pool purposes.Squamish Access Society campaigned against one of these leases - the "aerial ropes course" - in 2016 and earlier this year. However, despite hundreds of emails sent in opposition, council proceeded anyway. The recent expansion of the nearby Smoke Bluffs parking lot is welcome in that context, but it doesn't resolve all of our concerns.One element of our case was that Squamish needs a well-located transport hub for commuters and visitors, with capacity for car pool parking and space for bus access. Specifically we would like to see such a location linked with a bus service to key recreational locations like Stawamus Chief and Murrin Park (where car parking is now badly overloaded in peak season). The adventure centre seemed the perfect location, and is already used by airport buses and the Squamish Connector commuter bus. We note that in Squamish's 2040 OCP draft there is mention of the need for such a facility but still no designation for where such a facility could be located. This omission contrasts with the plan's exhaustive and detailed designation of future property development zones, cycleways and so forth.Climbers who are concerned at the district and council's lack of interest in this important issue should email planning@squamish.ca and council@squamish.ca respectively.
