Seeking Applicants for Senior Manager (Independent Contractor)

SAS is seeking a paid independent contractor to conduct a variety of the society’s day to day business for 6 months through the climbing season, under the direction of the Chair and Board of Directors. Up until this point our work has been entirely dependent on volunteers, so we are excited to take this step and be able to better serve our goals as advocates and stewards of Squamish climbing. Expression of Interest Deadline: April 5th, 2024

Duration: April - Oct , 2024. 

Compensation: $2300-$2850 monthly based on experience and qualifications of contractor. 

Hours worked: 20 hours a week of work equivalent. Some work will occur on evenings and weekends. 

Location: Squamish, British Columbia. This is not a remote position. Work will involve visiting climbing locations between Britannia Beach and Daisy Lake, so candidates must have their own means of transport. In the event that the contractor is asked to attend an event outside of this area, a mileage allowance will be provided.

About SAS: The Squamish Access Society is the climbing advocacy society in the Sea to Sky Corridor. We promote climbing access by engaging in advocacy work with land managers and educating members of the climbing community. The society also conducts infrastructure work through trail and crag base maintenance, and contracts guides to replace fixed anchors. Our work occurs on the traditional territory of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation).

Description: SAS is seeking a paid independent contractor to conduct a variety of the society’s day to day business for 6 months through the climbing season, under the direction of the Chair and Board of Directors. Some tasks will be expected to be completed independently and some will involve collaboration with board members and other volunteers. Hours of work will generally be at the discretion of the contractor but will sometimes require attendance at specified times for events.
The contract scope may include any of the following elements detailed below, but assigned tasks will depend on the needs of the society and the skills of the selected contractor. Exact scope will be discussed during the discovery and negotiation process and provided in the partnership contract.
Since this is a contract role, the selected contractor will be responsible for their own filings including taxes, CPP contributions and EI, and

Scope of Responsibilities:

  • Seeking out and applying for grants and other funding sources 

  • Attending meetings with other organizations and government agencies. 

  • Running the society member database.

  • Recruiting new members and maintaining a public presence for SAS by tabling at crags. 

  • Attending festivals and events to represent SAS.

  • Monitoring the SAS email account and assisting our social media team with direct messages and posts. 

  • Reporting to the board as directed on work conducted at bi monthly board meetings. 

  • Coordinating volunteers. 

  • Helping to organize and run community events.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Self-directed and works well independently

  • Ability to take the initiative and adapt to meet the needs of the society. 

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with ability to collaborate with stakeholders and be a public face of SAS.

  • Organized, with strong written communication skills.

Desirable Experience, Skills, and Qualifications

  • 3+ years of grant writing or fundraising experience.

  • Experience climbing in Squamish and familiarity with Squamish climbing areas and culture. 

  • Previous non-profit work experience.

  • Project management and leadership experience.

  • Experience working with land managers and familiarity with key stakeholders in the region.

  • Experience filing Section 57 land use applications

  • Literate with social media platforms particularly Instagram and Facebook.
